One of the least-known battles of the Civil War was fought at Palmito Ranch in Cameron County, Texas, on May 13, 1865—six weeks after the Army of Northern Virginia’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. Palmito Ranch was the last Southern victory in a war that had seen the fortunes of the Confederacy steadily decline after its spectacular early success.
